New: The Uyuni Adventure

From Desert to Salt

In short: Nayara Alto Atacama now opens onto a private four-day journey across southwestern Bolivia. The route crosses high-altitude lagoons, geysers, hot springs, volcanic landscapes, and the Bolivian Altiplano before reaching Salar de Uyuni, the world's largest salt flat.

San Pedro de Atacama usually feels like an edge. Roads climb toward volcanoes, lagoons, salt formations, and the high Andes, but eventually the journey turns back.

The Uyuni Adventure does not.

Beginning at Hito Cajón on the Chile-Bolivia border, the expedition continues north across southwestern Bolivia toward Salar de Uyuni. The salt flat is the destination, but the journey across the Altiplano is what gives the arrival its scale.

The Deeper Story

Want to Understand Uyuni Before You Go?

Our full guide explores how the Salar formed, why it is one of the flattest places on Earth, what lies beneath the salt, and how the landscape changes between the dry season and the famous mirror effect.

The Journey

Why Uyuni Is More Powerful When You Arrive This Way

Uyuni is often reduced to a single image: an endless white salt flat, or the mirror that appears when shallow water reflects the sky.

The overland journey changes that perspective. Before the Salar appears, the route passes through volcanic terrain, colored lagoons, geothermal fields, remote settlements, rock formations, and the immense open spaces of the Altiplano.

By the time the landscape turns white, Uyuni no longer feels like an isolated attraction. It feels like the final expression of everything that came before it.

The Route

Four Days Across the Altiplano

From Hito Cajón on the Chile-Bolivia border to Salar de Uyuni.

Day 1

Hito Cajón to Villamar

Cross into Bolivia and continue through Laguna Verde, the Sol de Mañana geysers, Laguna Colorada, and the high-altitude hot springs at Polques, then overnight at Hotel Mallku Cueva.

Day 2

Villamar to Uyuni

Italia Perdida and San Cristóbal lead to Uyuni and Hotel Palacio de Sal, where you'll stay for two nights.

Day 3

A Full Day on the Salar

Start at sunrise, visit Colchani, photograph the salt flat's impossible perspective, share an Apthapi lunch, reach Incahuasi Island when conditions allow, and end with wine at sunset.

Day 4

Departure

After breakfast, take a private transfer to Uyuni airport. The journey can also operate in reverse, beginning in Uyuni and ending near San Pedro de Atacama.

Day Three

One Day on the Salar

By the time the expedition reaches the Salar, the landscape has already explained itself in pieces: volcanic peaks, geothermal fields, mineral lagoons, and high-altitude basins.

Then the pieces disappear into white.

The itinerary gives Uyuni a full day, not a quick stop. Sunrise, Colchani's salt artisans, perspective photography, an Apthapi lunch, Incahuasi when conditions allow, and sunset unfold as different versions of the same landscape.

When to Go

Two Versions of Uyuni

For much of the year, the Salar is dry. The white salt crust forms geometric patterns while the horizon stretches uninterrupted in every direction.

During the rainy season, shallow water can transform the Salar into its famous mirror. Sky and earth begin to merge.

The mirror is a natural condition, not a guaranteed attraction. Rainfall and access vary, and flooding can restrict access to parts of the Salar, including Incahuasi.

Before You Go

What the Journey Requires

This is a genuine high-altitude overland journey through remote terrain, not a conventional resort transfer.

Altitude The route reaches approximately 4,990 meters above sea level. Travelers with significant medical concerns should speak with their physician before travel.
Remote terrain Long overland stretches and isolated landscapes are part of the experience, not just transportation between stops.
Changing conditions Weather, road access, and conditions on the Salar can alter individual stops and the precise shape of each day's itinerary.
Private guiding The journey unfolds privately, making the route feel like an expedition rather than a sequence of group stops.

The Atacama teaches you what happens when water disappears from a landscape. Uyuni shows you what it leaves behind.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Uyuni Adventure

How long is Nayara's Uyuni Adventure? +
The journey lasts four days and three nights, traveling from Hito Cajón on the Chile-Bolivia border through southwestern Bolivia to Salar de Uyuni. It can also operate in reverse.
Where do guests stay during the journey? +
The itinerary includes one night at Hotel Mallku Cueva and two nights at Hotel Palacio de Sal.
When does Salar de Uyuni become a mirror? +
The mirror effect occurs when seasonal rain leaves a shallow layer of water over the salt crust, generally during the austral summer rainy season. Conditions vary, so the mirror effect cannot be guaranteed.
How high does the Uyuni journey go? +
The route reaches approximately 4,990 meters above sea level. Travelers with significant medical conditions should consult a physician before high-altitude travel.
Can I combine the Uyuni Adventure with Nayara Alto Atacama? +
Yes. The journey is designed as a natural extension of a stay at Nayara Alto Atacama, allowing travelers to continue from the Atacama Desert across the border into Bolivia rather than ending their journey in San Pedro de Atacama.
Where can I learn more about Salar de Uyuni? +
Our full Uyuni guide explores the salt flat's geological history, extraordinary flatness, mineral-rich brines, dry and flooded seasons, and the larger landscape of the Bolivian Altiplano.
How do I reserve the Uyuni Adventure? +
